ON THIS DAY SEPTEMBER 5th 1992

The major news of that weekend was in the F A Vase Extra Preliminary Round where, despite Bowers United, Concord Rangers and Stansted all failing, Sawbridgeworth Town were 2 1 victors at Warboys Town whose goalkeeper was ex West Bromwich Albion’s Tony Goddard but he was no match for one of the Iconic ESl players of all time, Tony Liddle scoring both goals and even missing a penalty after 5 seconds ! Maldon Town beat East Ham United 1 0 whilst poor Reuben Ganes luck also ran out with his clubhouse burgled yet again at Ferndale. Reuben also advised clubs that his entrance was in East Ham Manor Way and not Pennyroyal Avenue and that also counted for Woodford Town who were sharing the ground.

Your scribe watched the first game under lights at Rush Green Arena on 1st and their 189 lux were magnificant but not so Ford United who exited the F A Cup 0 2 at the hands of Metropolitan Police, sponsored by McDonalds. Romford’s travelling army with hats, scarves, whistles were having to be seen to be believed but Southend Manor won the day by way of two first half goals from Billy Herbert and Gary Weeks. Sawbridgeworth Town led the table ahead of Maldon Town whilst Burnham Ramblers and East Ham United were last.

There was a Reserve Division that season with Great Wakering Rovers leading the pack and Basildon United were looking forward to 12th with an F A Cup visit to Ruislip Manor.
