ON THIS DAY SEPTEMBER 13TH 1997 All the talk on this day was about the dramatic signing on the previous Friday prior to their re-arranged game with Hullbridge Sports of ex-England International and Chelsea favourite, Kerry Dixon, by Basildon United. Kerry was transferred from Doncaster Rovers and played for 35 minutes in the second half as a sub in their 1-0 victory, the goal, a penalty scored by Adam French with the last kick of the match. On 13th he scored in their 7-0 victory at Saffron Walden Town and, again, a week later. Stansted, just like the previous year were our only side left in the F A Cup after their 7-2 victory at Clacton Town. Sadly on that same day, Burnham Ramblers went out 0 -1 to Hastings Town, Concord Rangers 0-1 to Purfleet and Great Wakering Rovers 1-2 to Grays Athletic. The League table was in early days with the previous weeks games cancelled in respect of Princess Diana’s funeral, Hullbridge Sports leading having played two more games than the others, Basildon United were second and Bowers United third, Saffron Walden Town has yet to secure a point. The League games played were Eton Manor v Bowers United 1-4, Hullbridge Sports v Sawbridgeworth Town 3-1 and Southend Manor v East Ham United 1-1. The leading scorer was David Hope of Bowers United. A poser was set in Centre Spot with readers asked what the connection was between 28 present ESL named players plus two Managers and an Assistant and it was that they had all played for Southend Manor at some point.
