ON THIS DAY AUGUST 28th 1993

It was Volumn Seven Issue No 3 of Centre Spot that weekend and saw the Preliminary Round of the F A Cup with your scribe making a return to Brightlingsea United in North Road once again, the home team now in the Eastern Counties League. The tie was v Canvey Island who won 3 1 thanks to goals from Kevin Lee, Andy Jones and Tony Mahoney late of Fulham and Brentford. Little was known, of course at this stage that the Gulls would progress to the 4th Qualifying Round, the first ever Essex Senior League to do so before losing 1 3 to Kettering Town. Burnham Ramblers won 2 1 at Beazer Homes League, Bury Town thanks to Steve Harding and Keith Glynn and Ford United drew 1 1 v Spartan League, Haringey Borough (losing the replay 0 2 ).

The First Qualifying Round draw would see Canvey Island at Basildon United and Burnham Ramblers at Bishops Stortford.

In the meantime it was only week three of the season and Sawbridgeworth Town led the table with three wins, from Bowers United and Basildon United, Eton Manor and Burnham Ramblers the last two. Great Wakering Rovers lost 1 2 at Bowers United whose goals were scored by Steve Card and Dave Wooley with Spencer Rush netting for Rovers. Southend Manor were four nil up at half time, Danny Schneider, Ryan Wilkinson, Billy Herbert and Martin Lawrence all scoring and that is how it ended.

Brentwood were playing home games at East Ham United and Eton Manor were at Stansted and, of the 16 clubs in the constitution, only four are now competing in our League, Basildon United, Romford, Great Wakering Rovers and Hullbridge Sports.
