On This Day

OTD - 6th September 2008

The FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round was on this day and eight clubs took part with reasonable success.

The weather did not affect our games though storms had hit the UK causing flash flooding in many areas.

Basildon United beat Wootton Blue Cross 3-1, Hullbridge Sports won away at Bedford 2-1 aet thanks to James Wackett, whilst Burnham Ramblers were victors over Harwich and Parkeston 3-1, Southend Manor beat Harpenden Town 3-1 and Stansted prevailed against Brimsdown Rovers 2-1. Barking drew 1-1 with Hanwell Town but not so good news for Clapton losing 2-3 to Thrapston Town and London Apsa falling 1-3 to Oxhey Jets.

Basildon United had spent the close season upgrading their New Hive ground and were producing a Match Programme of 'exceptional quality', they now looked forward to a visit to Wembley, that is the Vale Farm team though!

In the League, Takeley followed up a midweek win against previously unbeaten but still top of the table, along with Enfield 1893, Basildon United, with a 1-0 success against Barkingside thanks to a Chris Groves 65th minute goal. Romford beat Eton Manor 2-1 but Chairman, Reg Curtis announced that they had lost the services of Manager, Billy Cove (now at Southend Manor).

Bowers & Pitsea drew 1-1 with Mauritius Sports Association and Enfield 1893 with the days best attendance of 88 saw a 3-1 success over Sawbridgeworth Town with Sherwin Stanley netting twice and now leading the goalscoring list with 9, ahead of Basildon United’s Richard Robinson on 4 and Jimmy Noakes of Barking on the same.

In the previous week, Enfield 1893 inflicted a league cup Group C result of 6-0 over Southend Manor, Romford a Group B 5-1 defeat of Clapton and Barkingside had exited the FA Cup 0-4 by Stanway Rovers in front of 100. In Group A, Stansted beat Burnham Ramblers 3-1 despite losing their first two league games.
