On This Day

OTD - 19th October 2002

Top of the table, Enfield Town were two points ahead of Bowers United and celebrating an excellent 3-1 FA Vase win over Hellenic League North Leigh. Also in the Vase First Round ties, Burnham Ramblers were beaten 1-4 by Bury Town at the Leslie Field Stadium, Southend Manor lost 2-3 aet to Norwich United and St Margaretsbury inflicted a very heavy 8-0 defeat of Stansted. In the Cherry Red Books Trophy, a competition for clubs not competing in the FA Vase, Barkingside lost 1-3 to Herts County League, Cuffley.

In a full programme, league games included Brentwood winning 5-1 at Wadham Lodge against Eton Manor, Sawbridgeworth Town also winning away at Romford 3-1 and Basildon United under new management won 5 0 at Woodford Town.

Of particular interest was a Basildon scorer, Michael Kightly who wasn’t mentioned at the time but was about to leave for Southend United, Wolves in 2007 and seven appearances for England U21’s, an ESL star!

In the Foresters League Cup, Bowers United 2-0 over Waltham Abbey and Ilford 4-2 at Hullbridge both went through. Without a game were Saffron Walden Town who were actually bottom of the table.

There was no Reserve Division.

Leading goalscorer was Simon Deakin of Bowers United with 9, one ahead of Ilford’s Bradley Jones.

In the Football League second tier Division One, AFC Wimbledon drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace and in Division Three, Rushden lost 0-1 to Bury and Leyton Orient drew 0-0 with Bournemouth.

In the Highland League, Fort William continued on their losing which ended in just two wins in 28 matches, beaten 0-10 by champions elect, Deveronvale.
