THE FORMER TROWBRIDGE TOWN

Trowbridge Town presently ply their trade in the Wiltshire League but the original club was founded in 1880 and played at Frome Road from 1934 until 1998 when it was sold for housing and the club ran out of money and folded. Supporters rallied around their beloved club and sought a new ground at Woodmarsh but it could only host football at County level. They commenced playing again for season 1999/2000 winning the Intermediate division at the first attempt. Older fans will never forget their fleeting romance with the Football Conference in 1981 then called the Alliance League so the club had seen much better days.

Our Match Programme is for a Beazer Homes, Southern League Dr Martens Cup game against local rivals Salisbury on 13th February 1996 just two years before closure. The club finished 9th out of 18 with Sittingbourne champions. The following season with Forest Green Rovers champions was poor with an 18th place. Season 1997/98, their last, was not a success either with a 15th place, Weymouth being champions.

With a colourful cover and at 80p the Programme was a good read with an editorial, Chairmans notes, all the usual statistics. Team line ups, travel club notes, reports of previous games, complete list of all players and results, the Colts, Salisbury Pen Pictures and history in fact, everything that a very good programme kept fans happy.

Bowers were the official sponsors, synonymous with the town and very famous in the meat producing market but the factory closed in 2007 with a loss of 400 jobs. The site was bought by Morrisons Supermarket but sold again in 2016. Another sponsor from the town was Wiltshire Farm Foods who will be better known to present day readers.
