RANGERS v CLYDE SCOTTISH CUP FINAL 1949

This was the third Cup Final after the War with Aberdeen and Rangers winning the two previous ones. Rangers had won the A League as it was called at the time with Dundee runners up but Clyde just avoided relegation finishing in 14th place ahead of Morton and Albion Rovers. Clyde were a powerful force in post war football at their Shawfield ground and had beaten Dundee in the semi-final with Rangers knocking out East Fife, another club with Top Division status.

Our Match Programme was a large Blue and White edition priced 6d for the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park between Rangers and Clyde in front of a massive 120,162 and inside the front cover were details of the Community Singing with the Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir. A short piece also recalled that that the two clubs had never met in a Final. Next followed a full page on the Rangers and details of their previous twenty finals. The middle pages gave the two teams and all the games prior to the Final. Rangers having beaten Elgin City, Motherwell, a 3rd Round bye, Partick Thistle and East Fife whilst Clyde saw victories over Fraserburgh, Alloa, Morton, Stenhousemuir and Dundee. Readers were reminded that Scotland would play France on the next Wednesday at 6.30pm. A full page on Clyde followed and a Scottish Farmers Dairy advert for your “ Good Morning Milk” In contrast, a full page advert on the back cover was for The Challenge Old Scotch Whisky.

The game itself was a 4 1 victory for Rangers with George Young scoring a penalty in 40 mins and Billy Williamson netting three minutes later for a 2 0 half time score. Peter Galletly pulled one back in the 48th minute but another penalty for George Young on 53 mins and Jimmy Duncanson’s effort with five minutes left saw Rangers home for the Domestic Double.
