A LOOK INTO HISTORY TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY THREE
EVENING STANDARD PINK CLASSIFIED.
My life in Southgate was on the cusp of a huge change at the age of 14 and Dad had already taken up his new job in Scotland. November 11th was a free day for me from football so I just took a trip up to London to see the Lord Mayors Show in the rain and purchased this newspaper on the way home. My final game to watch was to be on 18th November, Enfield v Hitchin Town in the Athenian League and that would be followed by my first in Scotland on 30th December Partick Thistle v Airdrieonians.
The Saturday night pink classified was a must for all football followers and we had a choice of The Star, Evening News or Standard. This edition priced 3d had all the essential scores with second bottom Arsenal losing 3-1 at Aston Villa and the bottom club, Chelsea beating Bolton Wanderers 1 0. On the Non-League front, in the Southern League, Clacton Town beat Folkestone 8 3, in the F A Amateur Cup, Leyton beat Tilbury 3 1, in the Athenian League, Barnet overcame Grays 6 0 and in the Delphian League Aveley drew 1 1 with Edmonton. A mysterious “Other” result was given Basildon & District 3 Ilford 11 but that was, surely, another sport ? Some mistakes were inevitable with Winchmore Hill 1 Southgate Olympic 3 appearing in the Southern League column ?
There were plenty of match reports of London clubs with Spurs v Fulham 4 2 described as English football at its best, Johnny Haynes starring. The West Ham United 3 3 with West Bromwich Albion had Bobby Moore in his Young England Right Half position.
Once inside, the Racing Page showed Scobie Breasley seven ahead of Lester Piggott. In cricket England were in India with Geoff Pullen and Peter Richardson amassing a 159 opening stand. Harringay Dogs were advertised with admission from 3/6d to 10/-. The T V Pages had just two stations BBC and ITV with the Billy Cotton band Show, Perry Mason and Juke Box Jury a memory for our older readers.
The main news was on the middle pages with the Queen in Ghana, London Airport loaders strike, Christmas Car Parks slashed from 20 to 10. New detached houses in leafy Surrey were £5,500, TV Rental was 4/11d a week or a Tape Recorder at 6/3d a week. You could pick up a Bentley car for £650 or Hillman Minx for £335.
The final two inside pages found articles on clubs with one, considering Friday night football, Rod Laver beat Roy Emerson in Queensland plus out of town reports from Southend, Luton, Watford and Bournemouth so always plenty to read in those far off days without web-sites, google or mobile phones !
