ON THIS DAY FOR MAY OVER THE YEARS – PART ONE
To complete our season in three parts, we have been able to find a previous ON THIS DAY over the whole month of May through the years when the season was so prolonged and even including the last ever match played by Wivenhoe Town on 6th June 1982 !

01.05.1984, Stansted’s brilliant F A Vase season continued with a 1-0 League Challenge Cup success over Brentwood.
02.05.2002, Enfield Town were in for a busy week, first beating Ashford Town 3 2 in the Middlesex Charity Cup Semi-Final, then Leyton on the 6th May in our Cup Final 4 2 on penalties (Att 658) and finally on the 9th mighty Wealdstone 4 3 on penalties in the Charity Cup Final (Att 478).
03.05.1980, Basildon United left the League for the Athenian League with an all-time record as they were not defeated at home for three years from 20th April 1977 !
04.05.1992, The Harry Fisher Trophy Final at Ferndale Sports, home of East Ham United between Bowers United and Southend Manor was a true nail biter as there was no provision for a replay as the season had run its course. With one minute of extra time to go the score was 0 0 but Barry Rainbird of Bowers United with the last kick of the match, scored and saved the day in front of 138. Penalties have taken place ever since.
05.05.1977, Stansted lost 0-11 to Billericay Town.
06.05.1989, Southend Manor v Brentwood Match Programme voted third best “Special” in Britain.
07.05.1986, Witham Town win the League Championship 2-1 against Stansted.
08.05.1988, The “Centre Spot” bulletin thanked George Whiting of Eton Manor FC for sending a copy of a Leytonstone & Ilford final programme v Wokingham which explained problems about their proposed name change which is of great interest to readers now. It was to be WEST ESSEX UNITED but was denied !!
09.05.1984, The League record score at the time of writing is created when F A Vase winners travel midweek to Coggeshall Town and beat them 15-1.
10.05.1973, Billericay Town win the first of three League Championships and Basildon United are Reserve Champions. West Ham United put Harry Redknapp on the transfer list and Derby County win the Football League. Chelmsford City win the Southern League but Hereford United in second place are promoted. Woodford Town are bottom of Division One South.
