A LOOK INTO HISTORY TWO HUNDRED AND TWELVE
STOCKPORT SPORTS FC
Founded as Woodley Athletic in 1970 the club’s name was changed to Woodley Sports and saw football played in the Lancashire and Cheshire League. In 1992 they were champions of the Manchester League and became Stockport Sports in 2012.
This is a tale of yet another club gone by the wayside but certainly, over the years, issuing excellent fully colour and informative match programmes called the Saxon Scene at £1.50. They were members of the North West Counties League until the beginning of March 2015 when the league announced they had been expelled following a vote by member clubs at an EGM for serious breaches of League Rules. So, all their results for season 2014-15 were expunged which means that our Match Programme v St Helens Town on Tuesday 4th November 2014 became a piece of history. As I mentioned, the Programme at £1.50 was excellent value for money with the history of St Helens Town, full match reports, U21’s, League News, the Chairman’s page and Managers comments though the latter did mention that there was serious legal complications in respect of ownership to their Stockport Sports Village ground. The League table at the time found Sports at 19th place out of 22 with Runcorn Linnets well ahead at the top and Bacup & Rossendale Borough rock bottom. Glossop North End eventually won the championship from Runcorn and Bacup remained last.
One didn’t have to go far to search the clubs history as it was fully documented in the Programme stating as above that that they were formed in 1970 and in 2007 played in the inaugural season of the Northern Premier League Division One North. Prior to the start of season 2012-13 the club changed its name to Stockport Sports and began life in the North West Counties Premier Division having been relegated from the NPL due to “Ground Grading” issues (synthetic pitch?). The fully informative two page history hopes they will “continue their quest to return to the Northern Premier League” Alas,it was not to be for this particular club.
At the commencement of seasopn 2014-15 a new club waa formed called Stockport Town playing at the Sports Village in Woodley and presently play in the North West Counties Premier Division.
