A LOOK INTO HISTORY TWO HUNDRED AND ONE
BANGOR CITY’S RECORD ATTENDANCE
Bangor, on the Menai Strait is the oldest city in Wales and the football
club was formed in 1876 as Bangor FC. They have spent most of their life
in Welsh Leagues and were founder members of the Welsh National
League in 1921. In 1962 they won the Welsh Cup and entered the
European Cup Winners Cup beating AC Napoli in the first leg 2 – 0 and
losing the second 1-3 so had to go to a play off at Highbury Stadium
which they lost 1-2. In 1968 the club took a giant step and joined the
new Northern Premier League and even moved up the pyramid to the
National League but in 1992 the Welsh F A insisted that all their clubs
would not play in English Non League football so they returned to the
Welsh League.
Bangor City’s home ground from 1920 until 2011 was Farrar Road but it
closed, was demolished in 2012 and an Asda supestore built on the site.
On 18 th February 2022 the club withdrew from the Cymru League with
hopes of returning at a later date which we hope by the time you read
this may be an ambition fulfilled ? The ground had a capacity of 1,500 at
the end which brings us nicely to our Lucky Match Programme No 7396.
On 1 st July 1969, Prince Charles became the Prince of Wales in an
investiture at Caernarvon Castle and on 26 th July 1969, Bangor City
celebrated this with a fixture matching Manchester United against a
Welsh International X1 at Farrar Road in front of an amazing 12,000, by
far the record attendance. Priced two shillings the souvenir programme
started with the Chairmans notes and he hoped the floodlights would be
ready by the winter. The club thanked Matt Busby Manchester United for
their co-operation and to all the clubs that released players. A full page
photo of Manchester United was on the page before the teams and some
famous names appeared such as Alex Stepney, Bill Foulkes, 7y8um y6yh
George Best, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Pat Crerand that gave
Manchester United the power to win 2 -0 thanks to goals from Willie
Morgan in 6 mins and Brian Kidd 34 mins. The Welsh X1 came from 10
different clubs and the referee was a Ken Dodd of Rhyl, not the comedian! Captain was Mike England of Tottenham Hotspur. Lots more facts and
figures on Manchester United were included and on the back page an
advert for the forthcoming Anglesey County Show at Mona Airfield near
Llangefni.
