ON THIS DAY SATURDAY DECEMBER 7th 1985
Despite the results of this days games, Wivenhoe Town were still leading the league 7 points ahead of Witham Town, Brentwood, Maldon Town and Chelmsford City Reserves but having played more games than the others, being three in the case of Maldon Town. On the previous Tuesday, Eton Manor went to Woking in the London Senior Cup and were 2-0 up when two crucial penalty decisions went against then culminating in a 4-2 defeat. Back to Saturday and East Ham United drew 1-1 aet with Hoddesdon in the same Cup whilst two shock results came with Halstead Town’s 6-2 defeat of Brentwood and Sawbridgeworth Town 4-2 against Wivenhoe Town.
Woodford Town Reserves led Division One 4 points ahead of Purfleet, perhaps no surprise as their 3-0 defeat of Purfleet was the 42nd in a row for the Loughton Athletic, the 1984-85 undefeated champions and now, Woodford Town Reserves. In the Essex Intermediate Cup, Southend Manor’s First X1 beat Pennant Reserves 9-2 but Bowers United Reserves lost 1-7 at Dagenham Cables. The other “first teams” in the Cup, Stambridge, lost 5-3 at Caribbean International but Purfleet’s game with Grays Athletic Reserves at Ship Lane was postponed.
Woodford Town issued their first ever Reserve Programme as did Sawbridgeworth Town Reserves and Canvey Island announced that their Programme Editor, Robert Errington was now also their Fixture Secretary following his wife Margaret who had the same position at Southend Manor!
