ON THIS DAY JANUARY 4th 1986
The shock result on this day was the twice winners of the Harry Fisher Memorial Trophy, Stansted, being knocked out by league newcomers Burnham Ramblers to the tune of 6-0. Top of the table Wivenhoe Town were beaten 1-0 at Rush Green by Ford United but second place Maldon Town did not play.
Bottom of the table and well adrift Coggeshall Town drew 3-3 at Halstead Town, Witham Town beat East Thurrock United 5-2 and Eton Manor won 2-1 at Bowers United.
The leading goalscorer was Steve Tilson of Bowers United later to have a successful career at Southend United and Jimmy Greaves son Danny was the main star of Maldon Town. In the Essex Intermediate Cup, the bulletin was confessing to the competition being a “graveyard” for our league clubs. Division One leaders Purfleet suffered a rare defeat to Caribbean International 0-1 and Southend Manor succumbed to an even worse 0-5 drubbing at home to Essex Business House club Dagenham Cables despite their manager, the late John Welbourn spending 4 hours on the Friday night sweeping water off the pitch. Woodford Reserves also went out 1-2 to Heybridge Reserves, the game played at then old Beckton United ground. Terry Bellamy of Purfleet, with 14, was the leading Division One scorer.
The Reserve Division in season 1985-86 was called Division One because it had First teams in its constitution, Purfleet, Southend Manor and Stambridge being the three concerned.
The news from the Burnham Ramblers camp was that their late Secretary, Gordon Brasted had opened the batting with Cliff Holton for the Arsenal for whom he played at centre-forward in the 1950’s. The match was the Leslie Compton benefit at Highbury on 9th August 1955 and he scored 20 before being bowled by John Warr. He then posted a bowling spell of 1-20.
This date was dedicated to the F A Cup and two clubs just squeezed through against lesser opposition. Arsenal winning 4-3 at Grimsby Town and Chelsea a 1-0 success at Shrewsbury Town. Brighton & Hove Albion, then a Division 2 club beat Newcastle United 2-0 at St James Park.
The nasty winter was about to seriously affect January and February fixtures …..
