ON THIS DAY

By Michelle Dorling

MAY 10th 1988

This day belonged to Purfleet FC (Later to be called Thurrock FC) and fell on a Tuesday. The Ship Lane side won 3 0 at Sawbridgeworth Town thanks to Ablitt (2) and Brooks and won the Championship by two points from Brentwood with Halstead Town another 8 points behind in third place. The other game that day was Canvey Island 4 1 against Ford United. Having also won the League Cup, Purfleet were the first double winners since Heybridge Swifts in 1983.

In the 32 game season, Coggeshall Town with just one win and 4 draws were last with their Reserves in a similar situation. Len Cook of Brentwood was the leading scorer and Southend Manor, playing as a First team won Division One. With Stambridge in third place (51 year old Terry Mowle still playing) and St Osyth in eighth, both also being First teams.

Southend Manor were also granted Senior Status for next season. Kevin Lovell of Stambridge with 30 goals was the leading Division One scorer and he even missed ten games.

A 'little' club from Canvey Island, Concord Rangers would be joining the Essex Intermediate League next season.

This was the last season that First teams could play in the Division One which would revert to being the Reserve Division. With Stambridge also now a Senior club, St Osyth, owing to ground grading would miss out and only be allowed in the Cup competitions.

On this day, Newcastle United allow Paul Gascoigne to move for 2M.

The entire Portsmouth FC board quit with Jim Gregory who had sold QPR taking over and Bristol City appoint Joe Jordan as Manager. Lincoln City are about to secure the Vauxhall Conference League with Dagenham bottom whilst Yeovil Town win the Vauxhall Opel League, Wivenhoe Town securing that Leagues Division Two.

Where next?
