Rovers Roar Into the Final

Great Wakering’s Cup Dream Continues

Great Wakering Rovers have written a memorable new chapter in their history after a stunning victory over Step 3 Hashtag United booked their place in the Essex Senior Cup Final. (2-1)

Against higher-level opposition and under the lights, Rovers produced a performance full of heart, discipline and belief to seal a result that will live long in the memory for everyone connected with the club. It was a reminder of what cup football does best – levelling the playing field and giving commitment, teamwork and desire the chance to shine.

It didn't start out that way though, as Great Wakering Rovers staged a huge comeback from their 5-1 first round tie against May & Baker to win that game 6-5! What a game that was! They then went on to knock out West Essex, Takeley, Heybridge Swifts and Chelmsford City before their semi-final v Hashtag United.

The achievement is made even more significant by its rarity. An Essex Senior League club has not reached the Essex Senior Cup Final since the 1975/76 season, when Billericay Town went on to lift the trophy. Nearly half a century on, Great Wakering Rovers have now brought the League back onto the county’s biggest cup stage. Great Wakering Rovers have proven themselves in the last couple of seasons, to be a formidable side, reaching the all Essex FA Vase Final in the 23/24 season.

The win sets up a showpiece occasion, with Great Wakering Rovers now heading to Colchester United’s stadium for the final on Tuesday 24th March 2026, with a 7.45pm kick-off. It promises to be a special night not only for the players and staff, but for supporters, volunteers and the wider community who have backed the club every step of the way.

For the players, it’s a reward for months of hard work on the training ground and on matchdays. For the supporters, it’s a chance to see their club take centre stage on one of the county’s biggest footballing evenings.

The Essex Senior League congratulates Great Wakering Rovers on a superb and historic achievement and wishes them every success as they prepare for their date with destiny in Colchester. One more game. One more night. One huge occasion.
