The main news on this day was the Wirral National Programme Awards announcement that the Canvey Island Match Programme “ Islandview” was voted 12th best in Britain winning the ESL title for the third season running. Southend Manor were in second place and second best Intermediate Club programme in the country.

On the playing front, Garry Hill of Bowers Reserves scored the 1,000 goal in Division One this season whilst Wivenhoe Town led the Senior table ever since the second week of the season. Division One was being led by Southend Manor with Woodford Town Reserves in second place the story of the weekend involved the latter who fulfilled a First team Southern League fixture At Burnham and Hillingdon and drew 2-2 !!

Coggeshall Town were both bottom of the Senior section and the Division One also, the latter with just four draws in 30 games.

Steve Tilson of Bowers United and later to go on to Southend United was the leading scorer with David Hughes and Martin Riches sharing the top spoils for Southend Manor.

Brentwood beat Wivenhoe Town 5 1, Canvey Island v Eton Manor 3-0, East Ham United 1-1 Witham Town, East Thurrock 3 1 Brightlingsea United, Ford United 3 0 Halstead Town, Maldon Town 1-0 Chelmsford City Reserves and Sawbridgeworth 0 4 Bowers United.

Liverpool beat Birmingham City 5 0. Player of the Year, Tony Cottee of West Ham scores in their 1 0 win over Coventry City. Wimbledon will probably in the top First Division next season beating Hull 3 1 and Cardiff City drop into the Fourth Division for the first time and may well be followed by Wolves !

Enfield were well on their way to winning the Gola League with Frickley Athletic just behind them, Wycombe Wanderers and Barrow to be relegated – how times change !
