A LOOK INTO HISTORY TWO HUNDRED AND SEVEN
WADHURST FC
Wadhurst is a market town (some say village?) situated on the Kent–Sussex border
seven miles south of Royal Tunbridge Wells. As Wadhurst United they are now
members of the East Sussex League, and this League feeds into the Southern
Combination Division Three (formerly known as the Sussex County League)
Wadhurst United had last played in the Sussex County League for three seasons
between 2003 and 2006 . The first two seasons were successful but after ending up
13 th of 14 just ahead of Upper Beeding FC, resigned and dropped to the East Sussex
League Division Two but recovered form to now play in the Premier Division. In
those three seasons the club played at Sparrows Green Recreation Ground but are
now back in their old ground in the heart of the village. It has a stand and
clubhouse but is very open in aspect thus not fulfilling modern days ground grading
for a higher league.
Our Match Programme, priced 3d, is in the old name of Wadhurst FC, a club formed
in 1890 and playing at Institute Field, according to the Red and White flimsy fold
over but rare edition for a Sussex County League Division One game with Arundel
on March 2 nd 1968. This was their first season in Division One having topped Div 2 in
1966/67, in which division they had been members since 1964. Their notes reflected
on games with Southwick and Seaford and that Arundel had been promoted with
them. Next week would be the long journey to Selsey and then at home to East
Grinstead., the latter now at Isthmian League level.
After resigning from the Sussex County League in 1973, Wadhurst merged with Toc
H and became Wadhurst United with most following years members of the East
Sussex League.
