As we move into the third month of the year, the season is entering its decisive phase. The race for promotion and the battle for league places are really beginning to take shape.
In the Premier League, Little Oakley currently hold a five-point advantage over their closest challengers, Great Wakering. Beyond that, the fight is wide open, from second down to eighth, several sides are still firmly in contention for the play-off spots. Soul Tower Hamlets and Buckhurst Hill both have games in hand, which could prove crucial in securing their positions. Woodford, Barking, and Cricklefield continue to fly the flag for East London and are well placed in the standings. Ilford and Woodford boast the strongest away records in the division, with the Foxes impressively claiming nine wins on the road, while Woodford have suffered just two away defeats.
In the race for the ESL title, it appears to be a straight shoot-out between Hutton and Clapton Community. Having recently faced both sides, I can say with confidence they look like the standout teams in the league. Clapton, in particular, demonstrate the value of keeping a settled squad together — much like Hackney Wick did last season.
Behind them, Newbury Forest, Coggeshall, Lymore Gardens, Stansted, Rayleigh Town, and Brimsdown will all be battling it out, along with the league runners-up, for the remaining four play-off places. Lymore Gardens have enjoyed an outstanding debut season and also made an impressive run in the Vase. It’s encouraging to see Stansted bounce back strongly after last season’s relegation. Like Hutton and Clapton, Coggeshall have also shown real consistency and strength throughout the campaign.
With so much still to play for, there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns in the weeks ahead as clubs in both leagues compete either to reclaim former glories or to reach new heights in their history.
