ON THIS DAY DECEMBER 14th 1991

Brentwood were leading the league having also created a record game score 5-5 against Sawbridgeworth Town and were five points ahead of East Thurrock United with Ford United, Bowers United and Sawbridgeworth Town another three behind. It had been a dreadful week, weather wise and only two games were played with one in midweek, Woodford Town at Hanwell in the London Senior Cup but even that was abandoned at half-time with the scoreline 0-0. The two Saturday games on this day were Canvey Island v East Ham United in the League Cup, winning 2-1 for a 6-2 aggregate but the Sawbridgeworth Town v Southend Manor was abandoned in the 27th minute due to thick fog with a 0-0 scoreline. It was reported that there were in fact, only a handful of Senior and Intermediate games played. Reuben Gane of East Ham United was still happy with this team who had to brave black ice and fog to reach Canvey Island. The leading goalscorer was Jimmy Prue of Stambridge wih 19, Len Cook of Brentwood and Paul Flack of Southend Manor both on 15. Woodford would return to Hanwell Town on 18th December and lose 1-3.
The Senior Section looked a sorry state for Maldon Town who were languishing in Bottom place with 1 point from 14 games. In the F A Vase, we had one club left, Burnham Ramblers who were set to play Chasetown from Staffordshire on 21st.
Former East Thurrock United star Greg Berry was playing well for Leyton Orient but bad marks for the BBC who were reporting that he came from Thurrock East !

One very interesting scoreline in the old Division One on that day was Oldham Athletic 2-2 Everton. QPR were also in the top division securing a 2-2 draw at Manchester City, whilst languishing in the old Division Three were Brentford in a 1-1 draw at Torquay United. When it comes to “how the mighty have fallen” take German football club Wattenscheid, who, in 1991 were in the top Bundesliga division but are now fifth tier non-league !
The edition of Centre Spot on this day wished everyone a very Happy Christmas and Successful New Year.
