ON THIS DAY

By Michelle Dorling

15th March 2008

On this day, Enfield 1893 were leading the table by 2 points from Barkingside who had two games in hand. London APSA were trailing in last place a point adrift of Basildon United! One other club, now defunct, that were fourth from bottom were Mauritius Sports and Pennant FC.

Billy Heale was playing his 300th game for Concord Rangers and scored his 206th goal in a 1-0 victory at Barking. He was well on his way, with 33 goals to be the leading goalscorer of the League.
Despite Stansted taking a half time lead 2-0, Enfield 1893 fought back with Sherwin Stanley’s 51st minute goal increased by a Danny Jones brace in 58m and 60m.

Beaumont Athletic lost at the Mile End Stadium despite taking an 8th minute lead, 1-2 to Hullbridge Sports and Clapton drew 2-2 with Bowers & Pitsea at the Spotted Dog, Eton Manor were beaten 1-2 by Barkingside and Romford won 4-0 against London APSA. Finally, Southend Manor were 1-0 winners against Basildon United.

Without doubt the most well known scorer of the day was Carl Griffiths in the 45th minute for Burnham Ramblers in their 2-3 defeat by Sawbridgeworth Town whose Ben Doyle scored a hat-trick. It is a shame that, of all the clubs the Wales Under 21 International played for from Shrewsbury Town in 1988, Carl is only mentioned in Wikipedia as Maldon Town in 2007 and Barkingside in 2010 but not Burnham Ramblers, so, the 30 in attendance and ourselves know that to be different!

There was no Reserve Division.

17 years has seen many a change in fortune in the Premier, Football and National Leagues, Portsmouth were beating Aston Villa 2-0 and Liverpool getting the better of Reading 2-1 in the Premier. In Division Two, MK Dons beat Dagenham & Redbridge 4-0 and Morecambe were 3-1 winners against Brentford.

The National League among others saw Salisbury, Farsley Celtic, Histon, Rushden, Cambridge United, Crawley and Oxford whilst, North of the Border, Gretna FC were still in the Scottish League.

Where next?
