ON THESE DAYS APRIL 11th and 13th 1998
Once again these days fell as the Easter Saturday and Monday and four games were played but two postponed, at Bowers United and Sawbridgeworth Town owing to devastating floods in many parts of the country. East Ham United nevertheless spent two days preparing their Ferndale Sports ground and beat Southend Manor on 11th, 3 1 to rise to 9th place out of the 14 club division.
On the Monday, Basildon United led the table by three points from Concord Rangers with the Bees having incurred Concord Rangers undefeated record with a 2-0 victory in front of 225 at Thames Road. Stansted beat Sawbridgeworth Town 4 1 at Crofters End with one of the goals scored by former East Ham United and England Under 18 International, John Varney.
Great Wakering Rovers won the local derby at Southend Manor 2 1 on a lovely warm and sunny day with 150 plus watching on.
Bottom place was filled by Eton Manor a point adrift of Saffron Walden Town who were due to play a John Ryan X1 for their 125th Anniversary Match on Tuesday 14th. Stansted were still in the South Midlands Floodlight Cup at Semi Final stage with a game v Potters Bar Town to look forward too.
The leading scorer, once again, was Bowers United’s David Hope with 23, two ahead of Great Wakering’s Paul Flack, Gary Hart of Stansted had 18.
On 11th April, Arsenal score three against Newcastle United and all Frenchmen, Nicolas Anelka with two and Patrick Viera. Spurs 2 0 defeat at Chelsea leaves them just one point ahead of Bolton and Barnsley. Chester, in beating Doncaster relegate the latter to the Vauxhall Conference. A snowstorm on the 13th holds up Arsenal’s quest for the league title at Blackburn but the game was completed. Paul Gascoigne and Ian Wright are recalled for England to play Portugal
