Non-league football matchdays are famous for eccentric mishaps, ranging from vanishing equipment to eccentric crowd behavior and bizarre touchline logistics. Hear are some Classic Matchday Mishaps
A Wessex League match at Moneyfields about 15 years ago, the ball went out of play, and a supporter leaned over the metal barrier to catch it. He did catch it, but fell forward and ended up stuck, balanced on the railing on his stomach, not wanting to fall onto the pitch, but unable to get his feet back onto the ground behind him.
The Disappearing Flag: During a 1990s match involving Tonbridge Angels, a linesman signaled offside with such vigor that his flag detached from the stick and flew onto the pitch, forcing him to wave a pocket handkerchief instead. The Crack in the Concrete: Lower-league grounds feature hyper-specific local enforcement, such as stewards strictly allowing supporters to drink alcohol behind a specific crack in the terrace concrete, but threatening ejection if a toe steps in front of it.
Park Street Village v. London Lions, 2009 - the game was held up because an old woman without a stick (who had no idea the game was going on and who was oblivious to everyone and everything around her) walked across the pitch, level with the Lions penalty area, during open play. Luckily, the ball was at the other end at the time
North Farnborough v Brookwood autumn 1971. At that time Brookwood either played on one of the pitches in the grounds of a hospital, all of a sudden the Brookwood winger suddenly fell to the ground poleaxed, with no one near him and the ball on the other side of the pitch. It was then that supporters noticed a young boy looking very sheepish. He had been throwing sticks up into the horse chestnut trees which lined the pitch to try to get some conkers. One of his sticks had fallen straight onto the top of th ehead of th ewinger. Thankfully he was just shaken.
The Bus Ride Pyrotechnics: Former player Mark "Willy" Wilson recalled an away trip where an early red card led him to the clubhouse cider taps too soon; he later inadvertently set his own body hair on fire with an aerosol can on the team coach ride home.
