A LOOK INTO HISTORY TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN
POLICROM FC
Policrom were a football club borne out of the ashes of Muirhead Sports FC whose own
ground was at Orchard Way, Croydon, the Muirhead Company having purchased the
ground in 1960. Muirheads, a Beckenham company whose factory is now a Tesco were
founded in 1946 and the football club were a section of the Muirheads Sports &
Recreation Club. They first competed in the Bromley & District League. In the season
1959/60 having joined the Beckenham League they won it and repeated this success in
season 1964/65 and 1965/66. Having won the London Junior Cup in 1966/67 and after a
short stay in the Dulwich League decided to join the Greater London League in 1968/69
as a First team in Reserve Division One along with Reserve sides of Ford Utd, Eton
Manor and Canvey Island, and fellow first teams of Byng Road Old Boys, Eastley
Athletic, Harold Hill and Enfield based Rolenmil. Basildon United were in Division Two!
Policrom came into existence in season 1976/77 in the London-Spartan League with
their home being the Co-op Sports Ground in Balmoral Avenue, Elmers End. Muirhead
Sports had ended up in latter years at the same ground. Our Match Programme, sent to
me by Rob Meyers of Barkingside is for a Reserve game with Old Roan, a Kidbrooke
based club, but also has the Squad for their First team away game at Barkingside FC.
They wore Gold shirts and Blue Shorts and the programme appears to be given away
Free with plentiful adverts. They finished the season in 9 th place with Motspur Park
based Ulysses champions, Barkingside 4 th and East Thurrock United 8 th . 1977/78 and 9 th
was achieved again out of 12 clubs. After a similar 1978/79 that consistent 9 th place
came their way yet again in 1979/80 with Greenwich Borough champions and
Barkingside 11 th . Season 1980/81 was the final chapter in the life of Policrom with
Bracknell Town the champions, it was 8 th place of 15 clubs with Barkingside 4 th .
The present day Beckenham Town home ground is in Eden Park Avenue and was
previously addressed as Stanhope Grove and the Policrom ground in Balmoral Avenue
was on the opposite side of that Sports field complex.
